Share This PostASA President James Evans on the 2013 Soweto Marathon, Can anyone run Comrades with Lindsey Parry & Norrie Williamson talks about his Running Seminar – Run Talk SA Episode 16
What started out as a pretty innocuous episode of Run Talk SA has turned into our most explosive show yet. With the controversy surrounding the 2013 Soweto Marathon this week we went in search of an answer or two. And to say we were surprised by the response is an understatement to say the least. This week on episode 16:
- Brad spoke with the President of ASA James Evans this week. Unfortunately following the threat of legal action from Evans, we have decided to remove the clip. Run Talk SA was started as a vehicle to help grow the sport of road running in South Africa. We never aimed to become political or get involved in politics. As with so many sporting codes in South Africa, politics is too easily mixed into sport (To the detriment of the sport). So if you have come here to find out if the 2013 Soweto Marathon is happening, your guess is as good as ours. Two things I do know is at the time of publishing this the internal inquiry into what went wrong at the 2012 Soweto Marathon has still not been completed (10 months later) and secondly I will not be running the Soweto Marathon. If a race organiser cannot, in 10 months, figure out what went wrong at the last one how are they going to organise the next one, which is due to take place in less than two months. In a interview with Talk Radio 702′s John Robbie last week, Evans said that the Soweto Marathon is a financial burden on ASA. Please help me out here, how can a race like the Soweto Marathon, that receives television rights money from the SABC as well as having a sponsor (Although the sponsor has now pulled out – I wonder why?) lose money? Races occur every weekend around the country, with NO television money and many of them with no sponsors but yet the running clubs that put them on still make a profit out of them. Makes you wonder what is wrong with an organisation like Athletics South Africa. We would love to hear your thoughts on this issue, you can tweet your comments to
- We include a snippet of the “Is Comrades for me?” webinar that Brad and Lindsey Parry hosted last Tuesday. You can access that webinar here.
- Norrie Williamson chatted to Simon about the running seminar which he is presenting in Johannesburg on Thursday 12 September 2013

Share This PostASA Statement Regarding the 2013 Soweto Marathon
Athletics South Africa has taken note of a press release on behalf of a group calling themselves the Soweto Marathon Trust. In the press release the group claims to have cancelled the Soweto Marathon and made several allegations against Athletics South Africa and its president.
It must be noted that no evidence has been provided to Athletics South Africa that there is a registered trust by the name of the Soweto Marathon Trust, nor that anyone has been duly registered as trustees by the relevant authorities. Unlike events such as the Comrades Marathon Association, which is a member of KwaZulu Natal Athletics and organises a marathon by the same name, and the Two Oceans Marathon Association NPC, which is similarly an associate member of Western Province Athletics, there is no evidence available to Athletics South Africa that any grouping calling themselves the Soweto Marathon Trust is a member of any of Athletics South Africa’s affiliates. As such it cannot, in terms of the rules of the sport, organise an athletics event such as a marathon and therefore cannot cancel one. Continue reading
